Describe What You’re All About

It all started when…

Life Cycle Housing is a long-established society that has been providing and promoting affordable housing in the Powell River region for decades. Created in 1994 in response to the growing awareness of the critical need for social housing, the Society has a two-fold purpose:

To provide and advocate for affordable and accessible housing to meet the varied housing needs of community members now and in the future.

To raise awareness and support of the larger community in respect of the particular housing needs and goals of our targeted groups – seniors, families and people living with disabilities.

Our philosophy is not simply to provide a physical space for people to live, but to create, within our facilities, diverse residential communities which include low and moderate income seniors, persons with disabilities, families, and singles. In doing so, we create healthy, safe neighbourhoods that foster positive interaction among our tenants and with the larger community.

Since its inception, the society has become responsible for the ownership and management of 51 rental housing units on three individual properties. A new, 24-unit development for families and seniors is in the planning stage. We have also partnered with Powell River Employment Project Society to operate a provincially funded, 40-unit supportive housing complex for individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness (expected to open in early fall, 2019).

With respect to raising awareness of the need for social housing, the Society has sponsored studies and local conferences related to housing, and also participates in the City’s Housing Roundtable and its associated Steering Committee.

Life Cycle is managed by a volunteer board, whose members provide direction and support in such areas as tenant interviews, project management, finances and community relations. A part-time employee manages tenants, rents, provides support to the board, and works with the bookkeeper and maintenance contractors. Our annually appointed auditor is DMP, Powell River. Memberships include; the Powell River Chamber of Commerce, and the BC Non-Profit Housing Association.

The Society has no business operations other than its rental properties. Its sources of revenue include tenant rent, some BC Housing rental subsidies (for some Ontario Avenue units), borrowing and grants.  We do not provide support services to our tenants.

The annual general meeting is held each September.

Our 2019 Board members are:

President, Frances Ladret

Vice President, Vicki Sanzalone

Secretary, Sharon Nash

Treasurer, Pat Christie

Directors at large, Margaret Peters, Jan Hill and Marilyn Carey
